Making Lubbock more of a tourist destination

Just a few thoughts on how to make Lubbock a thriving tourist destination:

HISTORICAL SCULPTURE PARK:

Lubbock has produced many figures in the arts and entertainment…more than a few of them are displayed on the Wall of Fame. Consider for a moment, a sculpture park containing life size or larger bronze sculptures of every person or group that has been, or shall be honored on the Wall of Fame.

Every year or two, a new sculpture could be added so the park would be forever growing and changing. And I can see it becoming a major attraction, not only to locals but to a world-wide audience.

Visitors could come to the park and relax while having lunch or rent headphones and tour the park. As they approach each sculpture they would hear a short history of the individual or group and a sampling of their voice or music.

There could be a central arts center where visitors could watch video presentations of the artists at work, listen to music, purchase art, music and other merchandise. They could attend live performances.

Can you envision this making Lubbock a major tourist destination where visitors would return again and again to see the newest additions.

Lubbock has many talented sculptors that I am betting would be willing to help get the ball rolling.

Can you imagine something along the lines of Central Park in New York.

ART AT THE AIRPORT:

Why doesn’t Lubbock have art by local artists displayed at the airport? Other airports display art by their local area artists.

• There is more than sufficient space to display the art in an appropriately attractive and secure environment.

• You have a captive audience with money to spend and often a couple of hours to do nothing but be bored.

• It could promote Lubbock’s arts and artists and be a good source of income for the city as it would take something like a 30% commission on every sale.

• The art could be bought and shipped to the purchaser…no logistics of hauling stuff through the airport.
