The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: A MUST LISTEN SHOW! For well over a decade, I have covered the charges lodged against Ken Paxton over the so-called “securities fraud,” which was never fraud by the way.
All that time, the evidence has shown it all to be a political revenge issue and I have said that the reason it didn’t come to trial was because it was being used by Paxton’s enemies as a political weapon.
I said that the case would fall apart on appeal even if a guilty verdict was obtained before a Democrat jury. It didn’t even come to that – as soon as a judge finally set it for trial, the case, which was nothing to begin with, fell apart and the prosecutors dropped all charges today.
I’ll give you a full refresher going back to 2014 with some items as far back as 2004. Here are some, not all, of the stories I reference:
- Securities Fraud Charges Against Texas AG Ken Paxton Dropped
- Here’s why prosecutors in Ken Paxton’s fraud case may have agreed to a deal – be clear, this is no plea deal. This is a dropping of charges.
- Before deal in Ken Paxton’s fraud case, prosecutor was scrambling to buy more time, find new partner – it was never a slam dunk.
- Paxton Violated Securities Law, Gets Reprimand (2014)
- Analysis: Familiar Story in Attorney General Race (2014)
- Candidates to replace Dan Branch in Texas House decline to endorse him for attorney general (2014)
- Branch Led Effort to Defeat Disclosure Rule (2014)
- Grand Jury Indicts Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, on Felony Charges (8/2/2015) – leaked to the NY Times while under seal!
- Pratt: Is A.G. Ken Paxton’s indictment purely political? (8/3/2015)
- Paxton indicted on ‘strange’ legal theory (8/4/2015) and Case against associate of Texas AG collapsing (8/20/2015) – these and other stories which do not fit anti-conservative bias have been scrubbed from the press and do not show up in my search requests. Since I had copies from the time, I went to the web.archive WayBack Machine to find them.
- Paxton will plead not guilty, ask for jury trial (2015)
- Attorney General Paxton Re-Indicted in Fraud Case (8/18/2015)
- Dunn: Paxton indictment an embarrassment to Texas Criminal Justice System (2015)
- The charges seem absurd, particularly given that they carry a maximum 99-year prison sentence (2015)
- Lawyer’s Tactics Questioned in Contacting Collin County Grand Jury
- Judge tosses civil fraud charges against Attorney General Ken Paxton (2017)
- Chronicle botches kneecapping of Texas AG – an interesting sidebar to the issue and how the press has been nasty to Paxton.
(I really dislike putting all these links up for you as it took much work and my long running records to assemble. Why do I dislike it? Because I have learned that other show hosts and press members will take it and pretend they knew all of this stuff and had the records.)
