Mullins: Restore Our Rights. Now.

by Jesse Mullins

As the co-owner, with my wife, of a small business in Abilene, I know firsthand that the damage to local businesses from the Covid19 idiocalypse and its governmental restrictions is real and ongoing. We run a business called Jemully Media. We help other businesses get found online.

Our losses thus far are 10 percent of our revenues, and that’s just within the first week of the measures that are steamrolling Abilene employers. Restaurants and bars only? A RETAIL client left us, citing the restrictions, because they themselves lost patrons.

Where’s the legal basis for the stripping of our rights, not just as business people but as local citizens who can’t worship or assemble publicly?

Where’s the legal basis for the stripping of our rights, not just as business people but as local citizens who can’t worship or assemble publicly? We’re not under martial law—any attempt to invoke such would be fraudulent on its face.

Wartime powers? Over a bug that is nowhere near so impactful as a bad round of flu? Ridiculous. Our rights of liberty and the pursuit of happiness are God-given, not state-given. They are “inalienable,” which, for the fear-mongers and catastrophizers among us, means “unable to be taken away.”

I urge other West Texans to read deeper into articles than just their hysterical headlines. Go into the text, seeking supportive data, and you will see that the terrors they portray are not real-time—they are always couched as potentials. Everything is conjecture, supposition, speculation, extrapolation.

Everything is conjecture, supposition, speculation, extrapolation.

Mayor Williams, Governor Abbott—walk back this destructive overreach. Undo the damage as fast as you can, to lessen the fallout that even now can’t be fully undone, and certainly will ruin livelihoods and even lives.

We ask for even-handedness in public debate, and a hearing of both sides, not just the side of the frantic, clamoring mob. You know there is more to this issue than what you voice publicly. When you pass over, without acknowledgement, the distresses and the viewpoints of a vast segment of the railroaded citizenry, you are a party to the ills being done. We implore all public officials to stop catering to only the catastrophizers. When you treat the hysteria as deserving of strong action, you only validate and intensify the hysteria.

We ask for even-handedness in public debate, and a hearing of both sides, not just the side of the frantic, clamoring mob.

Governors in states like California and New York basically told their millions of subjects to go to their rooms until they’re told they can come out. They went without a peep. Will Texans be the same?

I’m just another Texan of a fast-growing opposition insistent on immediate lifting of all unconstitutional intrusions and overreach.
