Wendy Davis is no winning issue for Tom Pauken

Could Democrat pro-late-term abortion advocate and state senator, Wendy Davis beat Greg Abbott in November if Abbott is the GOP nominee for governor? Abbott’s challenger Tom Pauken says Davis could win. He says that Abbott may look unbeatable at the moment but that he’s vulnerable with Wendy Davis in the race.

These comments of Pauken’s earned him some press coverage this week and he is certainly right about one thing: Wendy Davis on the socialist ticket will likely energize the Left’s base more than any other rumored candidate. Pauken may be right that Davis would pull the leftwing voting base up to forty percent.

The problem with Pauken’s assertion is that the same applies to him as well in a November matchup. A leftwing candidate who activates the trigger of the Left’s base, envious emotion, will turn out more voters to oppose any Republican nominee.

It then becomes inconvenient for Pauken that the next question is: Who then would be most able to marshal the resources to get out the non-socialist, pro-Texan-values vote as well as blunt some of the nasty characterization of Republicans that will be made through the campaign and press?

This is inconvenient for Pauken because current evidence shows Abbott may be that candidate. Abbott continues to raise money at a fast pace; his very public fights with the Obama White House energize conservative voters, and; frankly just as it’s a delicate thing to politically attach the woman, Davis, it’s also a bit harder for the Left to demonize the man – in a wheelchair.

Pauken has strong arguments to make in his case for the nomination but, the Wendy Davis card isn’t part of a winning hand.
