A string of violence began in Austin’s Zilker Park this morning with a man and woman coming out of the woods of the park. While walking toward the Austin police officer, the man exiting the woods trailed behind the woman he was with and when ordered to show their hands, the man raised a firearm and shot the woman in the back of the head. He continued firing and hit the police officer.
A three-hour manhunt for the shooter began as he fled into the Zilker Park brush.
After being spotted near a school a chase began through the Barton Hills neighborhood and that’s when the value of armed citizens may have saved more lives. During the chase the gunman ran into a private residence on Homedale Drive where a properly armed Texan took care of business and shot him in the arm and leg ending the spree of violence.
The armed homeowner said it was police alerts that created an environment of high alert and that the warning “saved my life.”
Media reports are that the police officer who was shot did return fire but it is unknown if those shots hit the gunman. Another police officer rushed his colleague to hospital where he underwent surgery and is in stable condition. The woman shot in the head is said to not be expected to survive by KXAN.
The gunman was taken into custody suffering the injuries of the gun shots from the homeowner.
All the better for Travis Count and all the better for Texas!
