According to the Corpus Christi Police Department a call came in around 4:26 a.m. from a homeowner who said he was holding a person at gunpoint. The homeowner added that he saw the man in his backyard and that the person had since moved to the front.

As police were minutes away and on their way, the homeowner shot the man and later told police that he was in fear for his safety at that moment.

Because a fire station was across the street, personnel there were able to quickly dispatch an ambulance to take the alleged burglar to a local hospital. The man’s injuries are considered non-life-threatening, reported KIII-TV.

All the better for Nueces County, and all the better for Texas.

But wait, there’s more:

Corpus Christi Police Department Lt. Joshua Newman was reported by KIII as saying that visible security measures are a good way to keep prowlers off your property.

“Always have cameras, and always have lights,” he said. “You know, anything to make it a deterrent for a criminal to even want to be on your property, is the best way. And then if you do see somebody, give us a call immediately, instead of trying to act yourself.”

He is right and he is wrong. If you are not under immediate threat of your life or serious bodily injury it is much better to wait for police. As to cameras? A complete joke as a preventative! Cameras simply provide you with a ton of video of the people on your property and seem to have little deterrent effect with people who do not respect private property rights. My neighbors and I have much evidence of this.
