The news of Texas covered today includes:
Our Lone Star story of the day: The Texas House committee fact-finding report on the massacre at Uvalde’s Robb Elementary School is out and I’ve read it all, footnotes included. I noted five major takeaways as I read and highlighted the report (these are in addition to some of the more obvious covered by most media:)
- Our open border played a big role due to the “crying wolf” syndrome.
- While the ISD had a “good” active shooter plan on paper, it was not used in practice which is what happens to much expensive planning done by bureaucracies.
- Special law enforcement training may be a good but such training didn’t make much of a difference at the scene in Uvalde. (Same for teachers on campus security.)
- Our secular and Leftist culture is a BIG part of the problem, not in just forming these killers, but in everyone else not reacting to clear signs of problems. This “don’t judge others” culture intimidates people into a social blindness and in this case “the attacker,” as the report calls him, was a flashing strobe light of concern for this exact crime.
- And this is an old one but still true: When seconds count, police are minutes away. This leads to the idea that the only way to truly mitigate the actions of evil killers is to have a tool on one’s person that stands a good chance of stopping them at the place and time they initiate an attack.
There are many more points to ponder in coming days.
Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.
The Texas Democrat Convention was largely a bust – they couldn’t even keep a quorum on a Saturday to pass the platform. About all they did that gained attention was (illegally?) remove a conservative-leaning media outlet from the event. (video)
