Lubbock police reported that a robbery suspect and Valero gas station clerk were hospitalized after an attempted armed robbery.
LPD reported that two males entered a Valero gas station about 10pm on Tuesday (4/7/2020) wearing masks and that 17-year-old Avantre Fitts demanded money from the clerk while displaying a firearm. The clerk refused to hand over the money prompting Fitts to go behind the counter while his suspected accomplice ran from the store.
A fight between Fitss and the clerk ensued in which the clerk was able to take the robber’s gun. The robber then pulled a knife and lunged at the clerk causing bodily injury. The clerk used the robber’s gun to fire at least three rounds at Fitts.
Another customer came in and jumped on Fitts and took the knife away from him. At some point Fitts freed himself and ran from the scene.
Police later found Fitts at a local hospital and said he admitted to the armed robbery when questioned. He was arrested and then admitted for treatment.
The brave store clerk was taken to another hospital with a knife wound(s) of unknown severity.
