Leadership works. On surprise medical billing Lt. Gov. Patrick shows how.

Pratt on Texas - copyright Pratt on Texas all rights reservedLeadership works and the problem with Republicans, especially in Washington, DC, is that those with power have so often chosen not to lead. But, leadership works and we see that with conservative officeholders in Texas such as Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick on “surprise medical billing.”

Julie Chang reported in the Austin American-Statesman: “After Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick rebuked Texas Medical Board staff for proposing a rule that he said would have undermined a new law that protects patients against surprise medical billing, the board on Friday axed the plans.”

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick

I’ve covered the subject of Senate Bill 1264 which is designed to stop patients with “state-regulated health insurance and who have no choice in selecting medical providers from paying exorbitant medical bills for out-of-network services. Instead, insurers and doctors will negotiate how to pay the non-patient share of the costs. The law takes effect Jan. 1.”

Some of the detail of the bill was farmed out to the Texas Medical Board and it was learned that what its members were proposing was essentially a loophole that would gut the purpose of the bill in many cases.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, with others, rattled sabers loudly and the Texas Medical Board has gotten the message and appears to have put the issue back in the proper track. Good for Patrick and good for Texas.
