May 5th local election comment: Wichita Falls & Lubbock

Pratt on Texas - copyright Pratt on Texas all rights reservedTomorrow, Saturday, May 5th is local Election Day for many of you.

In the case of the Wichita Falls bond debt issue, I have recommend that you vote for the things you believe your city needs but remember that you and your neighbors will have to pay for those things for decades to come. KFDX has reported the total tax increase required to pay for all the propositions would be between twenty and twenty-three percent.

The only argument I have read in local media given to justify a new municipal complex downtown is not any recitation of the city’s need for new facilities but that building such will magically attract new businesses to Wichita Falls. And, in addition to that fantasy we’ve heard so-called business leaders say that companies do not care what the tax rate is. Those two arguments together go a long way toward impeaching the credibility of those saying such.

Lubbock’s three-way Lubbock ISD at-large school board race: One of the candidates, Amanda Banks, is now facing serious insurance-fraud criminal charges; another, Art Martin is reported by numerous people to have said he will be voting for the Leftist Democrat running against Dustin Burrows in House District 83 solidifying the fact he’s an all-out liberal, and Beth Bridges, who is a very nice person, is a full member of the always spend more Chamber and civic cheerleader crowd politically.

I can’t recommend any of them from a political direction but I do know that Bridges is a quality person and is likely the best of the three.
