“Crowd of nearly 100 outside the Irving Islamic Center showing their support for the local Muslim community,” was the description of a counter protest from Brian New at CBS 11 in Dallas. Breitbart Texas headlined a story about the same “Pro-Islamic Group Stages Counter-Protest to Support Texas Mosque.”
This free expression was conducted by Texans countering the event last week reportedly staged by one David Wright, III. That event had a bunch of folk carrying weapons outside of an Irving mosque followed by Wright releasing the names and addresses of dozens considered to be Muslim or Muslim sympathizers on Facebook.
I’m no friend of Islam whether it be peaceful or violent… One can be anti-Islamic and still respect religious freedom – if not we’re not much better than the other side in this war.
I’m no friend of Islam whether it be peaceful or violent. As a Christian I believe Islam to be movement of false witness which leads people away from the Messiah, Jesus Christ. I am however, a friend of Liberty and constitutionally protected freedoms and thus, I support the right of both sides to protest – even those who stood outside a place of worship with weapons. Having said that, I don’t approve of the David Wright method, finding it to be very bad form.
American religious freedom means the government cannot interfere with worship but, as citizens we also have a proper expectation of a society which does not intimidate or harass people solely for their choice of worship. We certainly don’t expect to have what amount to enemies lists published by those who don’t like our form of religion.
Breitbart Texas’ narrative of the counter protest being “pro-Islamic” appears wrong. In this case the event appears to have been a good old red-blooded American reaction toward those who sought to intimidate more than to persuade. One can be anti-Islamic and still respect religious freedom – if not we’re not much better than the other side in this war.
Pro-religious freedom is not automatically being pro-Islamic
