BURROWS FILES LEGISLATION TO PROTECT TEACHERS FOR PERMISSIBLE TEACHING FROM THE BIBLE
AUSTIN – State Representative Dustin Burrows filed House Bill 1815 to protect teachers from retaliatory attacks should they refer to the Bible in the classroom, which state law allows teachers to do in some settings. The bill enacts statutory protections for teachers when they teach History or English in accordance with current law. The Representative offered the following statement:
“As I visited with teachers, I was surprised to learn that many of them are not allowed to use the Bible in the classroom to discuss our history and the formation of this Country. In fact, many teachers were under the impression that they could not even utter the word ‘Bible’ during their day. This type of censorship should be stopped, and this bill is the first step in the right direction.”
The bill allows teachers who are suspended or terminated, for referencing the Bible, the right to be immediately reinstated and compensated for lost wages and benefits. This legal protection is in accordance with the constitutional values of this country; and , is an important First Amendment protection. Representative Burrows made these additional statements:
“Our forefathers came to this Country not to be free from their faith, but to practice it. Our foundational documents and notions of liberty came from the Bible; and, we should be free to teach our children about that.”
