Enterovirus: Multiple cases confirmed in Lubbock Co.

Enterovirus D 68 (EV-D68) has been confirmed in three children residing within Lubbock County. The onsets of illness for these children were in early September.

EV-D68 can cause mild to severe respiratory illness, and the full spectrum of EV-D68 disease is unknown. Symptoms of mild EV-D68 illness may include common cold symptoms, with or without fever. Severe respiratory symptoms have also been reported, mostly in children with underlying diagnoses of asthma or wheezing.

To help reduce the risk of infection with EV-D68, persons should:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after changing diapers.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick.
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
  • Stay home when feeling sick and obtain consultation from your health care provider.
