A simple alternative for illegal aliens getting Texas in-state tuition.
Robert Pratt
About large Texas public college tuition discounts provided to those living here illegally, Republican nominee for Land Commissioner George P. Bush says not to worry, the tuition discount is only a “nominal cost” to taxpayers.
Breitbart Texas reported on Bush’s comments made at the political geek-fest in Austin known as the Texas Tribune Festival. He said that until someone can present a “sensible alternative” to the Texas version of the DREAM Act, he would support the law that Texas Governor Rick Perry signed in 2001. Bush said in-state tuition for illegal immigrants is just “a nominal cost from an economic perspective” for the state of Texas.”
To Texas-rooted families who live elsewhere due to job or family demands the cost is not “nominal”. When sending their children to schools they love back home in Texas, often being alumni of those schools and taxpayers on Texas property, they do not get the large tuition discount now being given to those here illegally. I’m not arguing for a change which grants out-of-state people in-state tuition but, pointing out the obvious unfairness of handing the discount to those who are not here with legal status.
I’ve a very “sensible alternative” … Let illegal aliens pay the non-discounted tuition rate at Texas public colleges and universities.
George P. Bush insults Texans by saying that until someone presents a “sensible alternative” he supports the Texas DREAM Act because saying such implies that those opposed are not sensible. I’ve a very “sensible alternative” and it’s not unique as it already applies to billions of people and almost three hundred million other U.S. residents: Let illegal aliens pay the non-discounted tuition rate at Texas public colleges and universities.
Such is a “sensible alternative” which isn’t punitive or mean given it is the rate legal citizens already pay when they come from outside of Texas.
