Abilene city term limits petition drive launched

Media Release
July 24, 2014

Abilene Citizens for Fair Government believe a small and limited government is the best kind of government. The stance extends to the elected officials that serve in that government.

Therefore, we are starting a petition drive to amend Abilene’s City Charter to include term limits for City Council and Mayor.

The amendment reads as follows:

The Abilene, Texas city charter shall be amended so that the position of Mayor and the position for City Council member shall be subject to term limits as set forth herein.

No person can serve more than two three-year teams as council member or Mayor.

Anyone serving two three-year terms as Mayor, regardless of service as a City Council member, is no longer eligible to serve on the City Council.

Anyone serving at the time of the approval of this initiative shall be allowed to finish their term, but are thereafter subject to all the terms of this initiative.

The city charter requires that 5% (3,040) of Abilene’s registered voters sign the petition for it to be put on the ballot.

Petitions will be circulated throughout the city of Abilene for the citizens to sign.
