Doc’s Cigar Corner: Factory Smokes Sun Grown Toro

Doc of Doc’s Cigar Corner

The featured cigar is the Factory Smokes Sun Grown Toro (6″ x 48) by Drew Estate.

Drew Estate manufactures this cigar in four vitolas (Robusto, Toro, Churchill, and Gordo) with four wrap options (Connecticut, Sun Grown, Maduro, and Sweet). All are bound and filled with Indonesian tobaccos and are supplied in bundles of 25.

After a V-cut, the pre-light draw of the Sun Grown Toro is easy, with flavors of spice (white pepper) and natural tobacco. Upon lighting, these flavors predominate immediately, with spice increasing to a strong black pepper by 2 1/2 to 3 inches. This profile is stable throughout, with the addition of faint notes of cedar and leather near the finish.

Construction is good, with an even burn and little or no requirement for touchup or relight. One example showed cap leaf disadhesion, which did not affect smoking characteristics.

The cigar is smooth and medium-bodied overall, with spiciness occasionally becoming sharp.

Rating: 84

This is a good daily cigar that does not require much “nursemaiding.”

Availability: This cigar can be found at Smokers Haven [in Lubbock] in bundles of 25 for $50.00, or $2.00 per stick.  CigarsInternational.com offers a bundle of 25 for $34.85, which is $1.40 per stick.

Note: The Toro dimensions stated (6″x48) are by direct measurement of numerous examples. Catalogs state the size as 6″ x 52).

Enjoy!
