Citizens make Taylor County’s huge tax hike easy for commissioners

Pratt on TexasTaylor County’s commissioners passed a huge tax increase on citizens and according to KRBC the tax increase is a whopping 5.84 percent! Folks that is a property tax increase three and a quarter percent higher than the rate of inflation for 2019 [1.8%.]

Taylor County commissioners are increasing local government spending by more than three times the rate of inflation and that means growing the size of government at the expense of hard working citizens.

Taylor County commissioners are increasing local government spending by more than three times the rate of inflation…

And before you say it’s because of growth, take a look at two things:

First, if you have growth local budgets increase without raising the taxes of others because growth includes more tax payers as well as new development which is new revenue on property tax rolls.

Second, according to the Census Bureau, Taylor County has seen only 4.7 percent population growth – not in one year but over 8 years, since 2010.

So like many local government officials, Taylor County commissioners believe citizens can live with less money just fine but their government operations cannot. It is simply poor fiscal discipline to have government grow faster than population and inflation and commissioners deserve criticism.

Taylor County commissioners believe citizens can live with less money just fine but their government operations cannot.

However before we cast too many aspersions at Taylor County commissioners let us remember two big things:

First, local citizens voted part of this tax increase upon themselves by voting for the Taylor County Expo bond.

I am convinced that many voters believe bond money is free money; few seem to understand that passing a bond issue is voting future tax increases upon themselves.

Second, at the first tax increase public hearing no citizen appeared to speak.

Had just the people heavily decrying the tax increase under the Facebook post on the story by a local TV station, shown up to speak against it, commissioners would have considered it a tidal wave of opposition. But those folk did not show up, which leads officials to believe the public favors tax increases and the net growth of government.
