KWTX reported: “Officers first responded at around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday to a report of an armed robbery in progress at Iggy’s Gift and Clothing in the 1800 block of Barnard Street just south of West Waco Drive.

When officers arrived, however, the business was closed, the doors were locked and no one was inside, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.

The officers tracked down the store’s owner and the clerk who was working at the time of what turned out to be a robbery attempt, and they returned to the store for interviews.

The clerk told police that a man wearing a hat and a mask entered the store and started shooting, Swanton said.

The clerk said he returned fire, Swanton said.

The would-be robber left the store and escaped in a vehicle parked outside.

About 10 minutes later, police received a report of a shooting at North 27th Street and Morrow Avenue and when officers got there, they found a man who had been shot, Swanton said.

He was taken by ambulance to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center and was undergoing surgery.
