Lubbock ISD spent big on fast food, not just hotels and airfare

Pratt on TexasA report from EAGnews.org documented how Lubbock ISD has been spending money on airfare and hotels at a rate much greater than other districts across the nation having spent almost $1.5 million in FY 2016-17 alone.

The same organization, Michigan-based Education Action Group Foundation, has also documented that the school district spent over $100,000 on fast food in that same year too.

Lubbock ISD’s Nancy Sharp

The district’s highly paid spokeswoman, Nancy Sharp, gave as an excuse a district policy that she says requires them to feed students when participating in events (or) travel of six hours or more, whether that is in the city or away.

The problem with that excuse is that, like her simply stupid excuse for travel that Lubbock is somehow more “remote” than other cities like Amarillo, El Paso, Brownsville, etc., is that it doesn’t explain expenditures such as that made to feed Lubbock High band members.

“On Sept. 27, 2016, the Lubbock High School band practiced at the football field across town, according to Sharp. The practice went from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (note that the time frame was five hours, not the policy minimum of six), according to Sharp. “A band instructor used a travel card to feed three teachers and 206 students lunch,” Sharp wrote in an email to EAGnews. The cost? $1,803.90 at Chick-Fil-A,” the story reported.

What it demonstrates is that many school districts are broke partly because they cannot stop spending when it is not required.

If the rule is six hours then why are the expenses being made when well under that time limit, and why when on an in-town activity?

There is much more in the story showing big spending on meals in Lubbock and elsewhere. What it demonstrates is that many school districts are broke partly because they cannot stop spending when it is not required.
