Robert,

This is Karen Gibson's response to my letter (see below) requesting the council not to continue bleeding money on the countersuits. She obviously has been greatly influenced by people within the city who wish to continue a vendetta against Parker in spite of the case against the city officials/employees being dropped. I don't know how to respond to her because it is apparent that she has been coached and her "my mind is made up, don't confuse me with facts" attitude is clear. I fear that her future council votes will be decidedly non-conservative when it comes to spending. On the other hand, I received a response from Paul Beane, who cast the sole dissenting vote this morning, and he reiterated his position that he will not cave on this. I copied his response:

Dear S, I was the LONE vote against continuing to fund what I call this "folly" of trying to recoup money already spent, (which I think we have little or no chance of recovering) and I am opposed to funding lawyers for city employees in a case where they could recover damages and the taxpayers pay for their legal team. Thanks.....Stay in there...It's always good to hear from you. Paul R. Beane, Council, Dist. 4

I did not hear from any of the others whom I contacted, just the canned "thank you" from Gilbreath and these two. Have yet to get any response from the councilman in my own district, Todd Klein.

Well, that's my report.

S

Ms. ,

I appreciate your writing me and letting me know your position. I would like to tell you that I will be voting for pursuing this at least thru July 9th. That is when the Motion for Summary Judgment will go before the judge. Please know that I have studied this very closely and have been briefed on this. Although there is much more than this one case, it is a vital part of the entire case. I would like to remind you that Mr. Parker sued our employees therefore, he is the reason for the tax dollars being spent for defense. This lawsuit, by the way, was frivolous and now is not going his way. He wants nothing more than for us to drop it, due to the fact that there will be lots of information that could be revealed if their Motion is not granted. We believe that this is going to be the case. I am a very conservative representative and will do my best to look at all information to do what is right for the taxpayers of Lubbock. I was elected on this basis and am working every day to fulfill the promises I made during my campaign. I feel that the small amount of additional money to be spent pales in comparison to the potential amount that the city could recover. I would be happy to speak to you about this at any time and fill you in on the details that can be publicly discussed. The media is only reporting on the facts that they are aware of and there is much more to this case. Please feel free to contact me at anytime.

Thank you again for your concern,
Karen Gibson
