I've known of the story surrounding Delwin Jones and the Texas Tech medical school bill for years. More on this sordid affair, which demonstrates Delwin Jones' self-serving dishonesty, may be forthcoming. Here is the latest from Lee Elmer Tarbox, offering his personal opinions - not those of his employer, with the photo you'll find below. I have, several years ago, spoken with others who tell the same story about Delwin Jones' actions on the medical school bill.

Mr. Pratt,
Here's the picture of Gov. Smith signing the Texas Tech Med School bill
[below]. The West Texas delegation was so
pissed at Delwin for being a weasel, injecting his own version of the bill,
instead of the updated bill written by my father, Elmer Tarbox and Bill Heatly,
that Delwin was prohibited from being in the picture.
Before the Tarbox-Heatly bill was to be placed on the House calendar, the rest
of the West Texas delegation was invited to be co-sponsors. This included Delwin
and each were given copies of the new bill.
As I recall the story,
Delwin dusted off the previous Session's vetoed Tech Med School bill, used some
of the numbers of the new bill, and had his secretary waiting at the Speaker's
door with his bill, the next morning. After that event, Delwin Jones was frozen
out of every meaningful process in that and future legislative sessions.
[Explains why he left the Legislature for so long and came back in under the
Republican banner, - Pratt]
I asked Dad what he was going to do to Delwin and Dad responded, "Nothing, Tech
has a medical school." Only recently, after all of the major players of the Tech
Med School Bill have passed away, Delwin Jones now takes credit for the medical
school.
After Delwin was thrown out in 1972 by Pete Laney, he ran against my father in
1974. One of Delwin's campaign slogans... "Let's bring the old man home.." Dad
was 58 years old.

P.S. Please feel free to quote my letter, and this: "If anyone wishes to
challenge my account, I'll be more than willing to pay for a polygragh exam for
the two of us. If I fail, I'll donate $1000 to the South Plains Food Bank. If
the challenger fails, he.. she....has to donate $1000 of their own money to the
SPFB, and his.. her.. candidate withdraws from the race...or, if elected,
resigns immediately."
If Dad were around today... he'd be your biggest fan. He was a gentleman with
unquestioned character.. who loved Lubbock, and especially, Texas Tech.
