Robert,
I’m a long-time NFL fan and I’ve been a Cowboys fan since the late 80s. But I’m
done with them after the metaphorical lynching of Rush Limbaugh. The bureaucrats
who run the league, especially NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and most of the
players don’t represent my values. In fact, because of my conservative beliefs,
using Mr. Goodell’s logic, I could be tarred with the same brush as Mr. Limbaugh
– that he’s divisive, a bigot and hates African-Americans. Mr. Limbaugh is not a
bigot as far as I can tell from listening to him for 19 years. He believes in
treating all people fairly regardless of skin color. I guess in today’s world
that makes you a bigot.
I am sure that some NFL players, owners, and bureaucrats would have welcomed Mr.
Limbaugh to the owners’ club. But being silent and “supportive” was not enough.
Again, it brings to mind Pastor Martin Niemoller’s poem:
"First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.”
So yesterday was an NFL-free day in our household as will be every other Sunday this year, including Super Bowl Sunday. I cannot support a bigoted organization like the NFL with my patronage. I encourage each of your listeners to do the same as well as to contact NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell at:
