Pratt,
I happen to be at the city council meeting when the Centennial Committee ask the city to give them $100,000 for what they called seed money. There was no discussion about whether this money was a gift, loan, or if it would be paid back. This was probably one of those things that had already been decided in a back room.
It was apparent that this money had not been budgeted. I was appalled that not one city council member ask where the money was going to come from to give to the Centennial Committee [This was the Miller council]. As I recall, it turned out they did not need the money because about one week later, United Supermarkets gave them $100,000. They could have used United’s money as the seed money.
This is all the more the reason the Centennial Committee should return any unused money to the city up to $100,000.
To me it was the height of financial irresponsibility that the council would rush to give away $100,000 without asking where it was going to come from. What city need went unfulfilled? Was it repairs to Mahon Library? Was it repairs to our city streets? Was money given away that could have been used to buy property for a animal shelter or any one of hundreds of needs that the city has?
I think there are still four council members on the City Council who let their emotions overload their better judgment on this matter. This gives us reason to be concerned about their future financial judgments.

Burley, you write: "To me it was the height of financial irresponsibility that the council would rush to give away $100,000 without asking where it was going to come from. What's the matter with you? Didn't you know throwing a big party, from which Caldwell and others can make some money, was more important than those needs you mention? The Miller, Jones, DeLeon and Price block was all about "panis et circenses" my friend!
