Boerne ISD: More administrators added, teachers cut

Hello Robert,

It’s surreal, like it’s right out of your reports from other districts.

Full disclosure: my wife is being laid off from her full time position teaching German in Boerne ISD. (If Boerne German is not genuine Texana, what is?) She is an exemplary teacher. She is only being let go for “fiscal” reasons.

But Tommy Price’s model indicates that more administrators are warranted, so administrators are being added while faculty are being cut.

Over the last few years, they have built up the middle school German program to include about 50 students. But that is not enough for the new Superintendent, Dr. Tommy Price. His business model indicates 130 (that’s a magic number to this administrator) are needed for the program to be “sustainable.” So after trying to sneak through a cancellation of the middle school German the program, parents let him and the board have it via email. No the program isn’t going to be canceled or continued with a half time teacher, the other teachers in the district will have to shuttle between schools with larger classes and more courses to teach in order to cut the $50k for a third German teacher.

But Tommy Price’s model indicates that more administrators are warranted, so administrators are being added while faculty are being cut. Student to teacher ratio goes up in one of the booming districts of Texas, one with new residential construction everywhere, people moving into the district, and plans for new elementary, middle, and a high school already planned.

In addition to reducing German faculty in the growing district, I understand retiring culinary and ag/welding faculty are not being replaced. Too many teachers for Tommy’s business model. Too many teachers.

he faculty are all living in fear, seriously, when a Superintendent starts laying off faculty in a growing district.

Keep up your awesome work. I send anti-wimp links to my left-of-center friends all the time!
