London’s murder rate shows futility of gun control

The Daily Mail UK edition reported Sunday:

“London’s murder rate has overtaken New York City’s for the first time ever as the twelfth person has been killed in just 19 days.

“February marked the first month in history books that London had more murders than the American city with a total of 15 homicides. Out of the 15 killed, nine were aged 30 or younger.

“In March, there were 22 murders, which is likely to match if not beat out New York’s numbers.

The murder rate in London was never lower because of England’s gun ban but because historically it, and other lower crime cities, were made up of a far more ethnic and cultural homogeneous population. In fact, the violent crime rate for the United Kingdom has been, at times over the last couple of decades, the highest among the wealthier industrialized countries.

This is a truly fatal flaw in the argument gun banners make when they only talk about “gun violence” as if reducing the use of a particular tool used for violence will actually change the amount and severity of violence.

As I’ve repeated often, it doesn’t matter how one is killed, dead is dead. This is a truly fatal flaw in the argument gun banners make when they only talk about “gun violence” as if reducing the use of a particular tool used for violence will actually change the amount and severity of violence.

If a small island nation with decades of super-strict gun control and bans cannot keep guns off the streets and can compete with New York City for a high murder rate, just what will gun control bring us? It will only disarm the law abiding making them easier targets of the violent.

  1. I cannot tell you how many times I have run into people who assure me that the UK is a Peaceable Kingdom. “Not even the cops have guns!” or so I am told. Which is nonsense, as this story indicates…also, I have visited London twice, and have yet to see anyone in the London Met who is NOT carrying a gun!
