Three Republicans have filed for the Texas House Speaker race

Pratt on TexasState Rep. Tan Parker of Flower Mound, became the third Republican to enter the race for Texas House speaker last week.

Parker was first elected to the House in 2006 and serves as chairman of the Investments and Financial Services Committee. Currently he also sits on the Redistricting and the International Trade and Intergovernmental Affairs committees.

More importantly, Tan Parker is chairman of the House Republican Caucus and presided over the moves to change caucus rules to allow for the nominating of a unified GOP speaker candidate from within the body. However, such doesn’t mean that Tan Parker is a super strong government reform conservative.

Parker is however, much like fellow speaker candidate Phil King of Weatherford, from a conservative-leaning middle which I think will be required to gain enough votes to win the caucus nomination for speaker.

Rep. Phil King

Announced speaker candidates to-date are  Tan Parker, Phil King, and the very liberal Republican and Straus acolyte John Zerwas of Richmond.

Straus, you will remember, did not run for re-election to the House and instead will be using his huge, millions of dollars, campaign account from the outside to continue trying to move the Republican Party the Democrats’ way.

Rep. John Zerwas

It is too early to press state representatives toward support any specific person. The best thing we can do is lean heavily on our representatives to agree to support the most conservative and effective man in the race and frankly we don’t yet know who that will be.
