Houston leaders should be ashamed of contradicting Governor Abbott on evacuation Friday

If you missed Friday’s Pratt on Texas you missed the news that even before Hurricane Harvey made landfall, Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner and other Bayou City leaders were busy attacking Governor Greg Abbott for suggesting, as the state’s top leader, that people should evacuate areas in the path of the storm including the Houston-area.

In a repeat of the utter incompetence of we saw in New Orleans, Houston’s democrat mayor was more interested in a turf-war than in making sure as many people as possible were out of the path of coming devastation. By the weekend, the Washington Post and other media had picked up on the sordid story though, as you’d expect, there was no hard bashing of a liberal-democrat mayor as we’d have seen if the roles were reversed.

Turner and his cadre of officials were putting out twitter messages like “LOCAL OFFICIALS KNOW BEST” when Governor Abbott was saying:

“Even if an evacuation order hasn’t been issued by your local official, if you’re in an area between Corpus Christi and Houston, you need to strongly consider evacuating. What you don’t know, and what nobody else knows right now, is the magnitude of flooding that will be coming. You don’t want to put yourself in a situation where you could be subject to a search and rescue.”

Shame on Houston officials for wasting time with this pettiness and for causing confusion.

True Texans, if you are wanting to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey, I recommend two specific charities. Doing the most good is the Salvation Army and Samaritan’s Purse.

Texas Baptist Men is another helping agency that does much good. All workers are volunteers and donations go where intended by donors.
