The Texas press continues its assault on Republican state Representative Matt Rinaldi’s character while ignoring, downplaying, and excusing the behavior of Democrat reps who used force and intimidation to attack Rinaldi for his speech. And remember, Rinaldi didn’t even curse at or directly insult any fellow member of the House.

On the regular session’s last day, Rinaldi reacted to the rule-breaking, angry mob disrupting the House from its gallery by saying out loud that he called Immigration and Customs Enforcement because he believed he saw protestors holding signs admitting their illegal status. To the press and to Democrats, this statement of law-and-order action was the same, if not worse, than if he had directly insulted a fellow representative’s mother.
A Democrat member of the House, Pancho Nevarez, admitted to BuzzFeed that he committed assault on Representative Rinaldi because to him, Rinaldi’s comment on calling ICE was “fighting words.” Nevarez was joined by other Democrats surrounding Rinaldi on the House floor yelling threats and physically intimidating him.
To the Texas press, Matt Rinaldi is the villain. The Dallas Morning News began a report on potential election challengers to Rinaldi by painting him the sole villain and ignorning completely that he was a victim of physical assault on the House floor.
The Austin American-Statesman is running stories [see here & here] attempting to make Rinaldi a liar and claiming they found no evidence of protesters holding signs admitting illegal status.
Whether Rinaldi saw a sign or not is irrelevant. Anyone has the right to say out loud that he’s called the cops, or ICE, or any other authority about anything without being subjected to assault and physical intimidation.
