It was half-witted for Democrats to make Sanctuary Cities a fall-on-the-sword issue

“After more than 16 hours of debate, the Texas House at about 3 a.m. Thursday voted 93-54 to give initial approval to the bill to ban so-called sanctuary cities, the common term for jurisdictions that decline to assist federal immigration enforcement,” reported the Austin American-Statesman.

The bill was strengthened on the floor fixing some dilution that happened in committee.

“One by Rep. Matt Schaefer, R-Tyler, prohibits local law enforcement agencies from discouraging their officers from inquiring about the immigration status of people who have been detained, a broad category including routine traffic stops. The bill previously limited that provision to cases in which the person has already been arrested. Schaefer’s amendment, approved in an 81-64 vote, drew intense criticism from Democrats..,” the Statesman reported.

The House body did good work on the sanctuary city issue brought forth by Sen. Charles Perry and made an emergency item by Governor Abbott. They rejected several attempts to end debate early and go home if conservatives would just give up their bill strengthening amendments.

Better yet for Republicans, the Dems strident message of coddling criminal illegal aliens, which is what this issue largely deals with, is a turn off to a huge portion of the electorate.

For once there was little sanctuary in the House for the blowhard, mostly fake, and ginned-up emotionalism from the Democrat Left on what is, to most people, a fairly clear Rule of Law issue.

I say the issue is an example of the stupidity of Texas Democrats. Yes their antics will please part of their base but only a part. There is little in this issue that will broaden appeal for Democrats among the electorate.

It was half-witted to make this one of their highest profile fights of the legislative session.
