Houston’s mayor confirms help Joe Straus gives Democrats

Yesterday I discussed how costly for Travis County adopting sanctuary policies which shield jailed illegal aliens from federal justice has become. In the meantime, Dallas County commissioners, all but the lone Republican on the court, have voted to be a sanctuary county of sorts and said they’ll not comply with anything to do with federal immigration law enforcement beyond the essential, whatever that means.

(As an aside, my guess is that such means they will comply while telling the public they are taking the Leftwing position of unrestricted illegal immigration.)

But it is long time powerful Democrat state legislator Sylvester Turner, the new mayor of Houston, who has reinforced what I’ve told you about Texas House leadership.

In the Texas House, I know, they will be fighting very hard not to pass a sanctuary bill. It has never passed out the Texas House under Speaker (Joe) Straus. – Sylverster Turner

In a Question and Answer piece in the Houston Chronicle on the sanctuary cities issue, Turner was asked: In your opinion, what are the chances that SB 4 will be approved?

Turner’s answer is telling, he said: “There has always been a sanctuary bill filed probably in the last five sessions, but no one has ever passed the Texas Legislature. This time, there is more pressure on the members to vote to pass a sanctuary bill.”

“In the Texas House, I know, they will be fighting very hard not to pass a sanctuary bill. It has never passed out the Texas House under Speaker (Joe) Straus. Still, the governor is supporting it; this time it may be a real possibility that it comes out,” Turner said.

There is a host of folk who just don’t want to believe me and other conservatives when I say Speaker Joe Straus has been aiding Democrats for years by slow-walking and otherwise stopping conservative legislation. Turner, among the state’s most powerful and successful Democrats, is confirming as much in his answer on the sanctuary cities bill.
