Trump’s bullying industry little different than Obama’s

The Texas Legislature needs to reign in bullying by local government.

Let’s hope President-Elect Trump doesn’t overdo the “bully” from “bully pulpit” as President. His threatening private companies with taxes when they build products in other countries is wrongly cheered by some but is wholly un-American, disrespectful of freedom, and an abuse of the position of Head of State.

Government needs to ensure the country has a favorable business climate in both regulatory and tax areas and then allow the market to function freely. Trump’s cajoling is little different than Obama’s attacks on the energy industry and its freedom to operate as needed.

Trump should work to get the government sector more business friendly and not interfere with where freeborn, private citizens decide to use their resources. Otherwise he’s little different from the directed-economy progressives on the Left.

Regulation closer to home is no less regulation and nothing makes the loss of freedom any less burdensome when it comes from local officials as opposed to those in Austin or D.C.

And just as with the Left, the short term gains well cheered by people will create long term pain for industries that will be much harder on the country. It reminds of what the unions did to almost destroy automobile manufacturing in this country by insisting their short term needs be met at the expense long term global viability of the firms that employed them.

The upcoming Texas Legislature can do its part to protect the Lone Star State’s business climate by seriously reigning in aggressive attempts by local governments to lay down their own economy and personal freedom suffocating regulatory regimes under the banner of “local control.”

Regulation closer to home is no less regulation and nothing makes the loss of freedom any less burdensome when it comes from local officials as opposed to those in Austin or D.C.
