Last week I told you about Ben Weiner, a graduate assistant at Texas State University who has headed up a petition at the school to have the state school defy the law and become a place offering sanctuary to those here outside of legal means. I called him ignorant, naive and stupid and demonstrated why all three words are applicable to him.

There are things quite funny about Weiner’s sanctuary university movement at Texas State and you can find more at prattontexas.com under the column headline “Campus life may foster ignorance and stupidity.”

Likely they’ve helped Senator Perry and others know to broaden the legislation so as to not leave out any unit of state government.

In reaction to the story, in which Weiner seems to naively believe that his petition is important and can actually result in such things as Trump deciding to keep Obama’s DACA amnesty program, Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent out a message via Twitter saying:

“Texas will not tolerate sanctuary campuses or cities. I will cut funding for any state campus if it establishes sanctuary status.”

Under current law the governor can’t simply cut funding off but he does have a very unique tool: the line item veto. So ultimately for new funding passed by the upcoming Legislature it appears that the Abbott could indeed strike a school’s funding. It would be a huge crisis and has about zero chance of happening but it easy for governors to carve out parts of funding which seems enough.

The silly, and it is silly, petition and the ignorant and stupid behind such at Texas State are relatively unimportant and I’ll wager that their antics are actually going to be helpful in passing anti-sanctuary cities legislation. Likely they’ve helped Senator Perry and others know to broaden the legislation so as to not leave out any unit of state government.
