It is true that Donald Trump underperformed Mitt Romney in Texas bringing the Republican victory margin in the presidential race to the closest it has been in twenty years. It was a 9.11 percent margin, still a blow-out but also not as wide of a margin as past elections.
But, is this result something for Texas Democrats to cheer? Is such a sign that they are effectively narrowing the gap in Texas? Looking across the board the answer is emphatically no!
In fact, one press report says Trump made inroads among some heavily Hispanic regions.
Not only did Texas Democrats fail to win TX23, the only major congressional district in-play and which leans Democrat, Dems failed to do little more than gain 4 seats in the Texas Legislature beating mostly weak Speaker Straus allies in toss-up or Dem-leaning districts.
Remember the 2008 Obama election? In that one Texas Dems ended up with almost half of the Texas House. And now, with a candidate who did all he could to speak, well let’s say in-artfully, about Hispanics, Dems had little success in pulling large voter turnout increases in Hispanic dominated regions.

The TX23 disaster is especially troubling for Dems as millions were spent; it was the only Texas congressional race national libs poured money into; Hurd’s win over Gallego was the first time an incumbent held on to the seat in eight years as it has flipped to the Dems in every other presidential cycle.
