TX19: Arrington & the European Union

Pratt on TexasAs if to demonstrate elitist DC political insider status, Jodey Arrington addressed Republican Party conventions in both Taylor and Lubbock County this weekend talking mainly about the European Union!

The Abilene Reporter News summed up the Taylor County version this way: “Robertson characterized the race as being between the “grassroots conservative movement and the establishment.” Arrington spoke in more general terms of “turning the ship around that’s headed toward being the European Union and docking it safely.”

I get what he’s saying but for how many voters in Texas’ 19th Congressional District is talk of the European Union utmost in their minds among political and personal concerns?

Both Arrington and Robertson kept their remarks brief which was appreciated by delegates who had hours of work to do. And other than the EU, what struck me from Arrington’s limited remarks was the line about “a passion for public service.”

Such is defined by a major dictionary as “Employment within a governmental system, especially within the civil service.” Arrington has been in government most of his life mostly in direct political appointment positions.

I don’t think of service in politics and government, where one gets a bigger paycheck, status and perks than one could earn in the private sector based on one’s resume and experience, to be “public service” in the warm and fuzzy self-sacrifice sense intended by Arrington.

And that is among the many reasons I can’t support him for office. His life has been in a world where he wins with bigger government at the expense of the rest of us, people like you, me, and his opponent Glen Robertson – a small businessman.
