Neugebauer’s “nonsensical” spin on Cromnibus

Pratt,

This is the response I got after asking why Neugebauer voted for the rule to bring Cromnibus to a floor vote!  Nonsensical spin as usual i.e. “I believe each spending bill should be given thorough consideration and debate”.  I knew that this would be his response.  Really, really tired of the spin and unresponsiveness to his conservative constituents. We only needed 2 friggin votes!

P.S. After reading this letter again, I am even more po’d.

Dear Ms. S.:

Thank you for contacting me with your thoughts on President Obama’s announcement of executive action on immigration.  I share your deep concern with his unilateral action, and I welcome the opportunity to respond.

As you know, on November 20, 2014, President Obama outlined a plan to grant illegal immigrants options outside of our current law.  His Executive Order would give illegal immigrants who have been in the United States for at least five years the chance to apply for work permits and temporary deferrals for deportation.  It would apply to about four million minors and undocumented parents of U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents.

Like you, I am extremely disappointed that President Obama has once again decided to bypass the U.S. Constitution and ignore our system of checks and balances.  Instead of working with Congress, the President has decided to act outside his bounds and reach for another executive power grab.

Even worse, the President’s failure to enforce our current immigration laws is an affront to the millions of people who have followed the rules to gain legal status.  I have had the honor of assisting many individuals in Texas’ 19th District through the legal immigration process, and I know they deserve better from this Administration.

There’s no question that our immigration system needs reform, but I do not believe the President’s idea is the way to do it.  We shouldn’t reward those who have broken American laws by entering the country illegally at the expense of those who have followed the rules and have waited for many years.

We can do better.  Congress must now use every tool we have to stop the President’s power grab and instead push him to enforce our current laws.  The House of Representatives passed a bill on December 4, 2014 to prevent the Administration from enacting any of these specific proposals on immigration.

I also voted against the “Cromnibus”, the runaway spending bill to fund the government past December 11, 2014.  Like you, I had concerns that it did not put the proper restrictions on how the White House enacts immigration policy.  I also disagree with the method through which we passed this bill.  At a time when our national debt has topped $18 trillion, I believe each spending bill should be given thorough consideration and debate.  When we force a comprehensive spending vote just hours before its deadline, we are not able to give spending priorities the consideration they deserve.

I assure you that I will continue to work with my colleagues actively to find common sense solutions to our President’s overreaching executive action, and our current immigration problem.

In today’s world, it is critical that citizens in the 19th District of Texas know what is going on in their federal government. I know you would be interested in my weekly e-newsletter, “Randy’s Roundup,” which will keep you up to date on the important issues facing our country, and in particular, West Texas. Please join the Roundup by visiting www.randy.house.gov.

Again, thank you for contacting me.  Please do not hesitate to let me know if I can be of service to you in the future.

Sincerely,

Randy Neugebauer
Member of Congress
