- Burka, a man of the Left, thinks calling Speaker Straus “Left of Center” is ridiculous. – I’ve been at Texas politics my entire life. There is zero question to this former Republican county chairman, campaign consultant and manager, and everyday watcher that based upon the primary election votes of the Texas GOP and the Texas Democrats, Speaker Straus is Left of Center. I guess you folk in Austin so used to living in the Left can’t see it but it is certainly clear to me. The man told me to my face he was a “moderate” and in the modern world, that is very far from conservative. Given that he owes his speakership to the vote of Democrats, it all fits.
