“No” on Propositions 8 & 9

On Monday, Early Voting begins in the Texas Constitutional Amendment election. I’ve covered Propositions 1 through 5, now I’ll skip to 7 through 9. I’ll discuss Prop. 6, the water finance plan on Monday morning (8/21/2013).

Prop. 7 I’ve already addressed as a “no” vote. City council folk have no business choosing their buddies to fill vacancies. Voters should get to vote to do so even if it costs a little.

Prop. 8 requires a statewide vote but it’s to establish a hospital district in Hidalgo County and repeals the cap on the tax rate for that district. Hidalgo County is full of Democrats who can tax themselves all they want but then they run to state coffers and take our money to feed their big government habit. For that reason alone I’m opposing Prop. 8.

Prop. 9 gives the unaccountable State Commission on Judicial Conduct more sanctions it can use against a judge. There may be a need for more flexibility but why hand such to a body which is effectively unaccountable to the public? Judges work for all of us, not just the clubby members of the bar. I oppose Prop. 9. The current ability to issue a censure or recommend removal or retirement of a judge is enough. When you add a bunch of lesser items to the list, you are ensuring that the commission will become a political tool going after all sorts of lesser things and often driven by the complaints of political opponents. Pardon the pun but, the bar should be set high before a commission can poke its nose into business better left to local voters.

I’m “No” on Props. 7, 8 and 9. I may be the only one but, I’m still against ‘em.
