Those who won’t lead in DC jealous of those who will

The week has been filled with horrible stories from the conservative haters in the national media about our Ted Cruz. It’s no surprise to learn for the millionth time that liberals hate conservatives, constitutionalists, and just about anyone from Texas.

Ted Cruz

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz

But amongst it all there was a bit of truth I found in a story by David Frum in which he posits that “The Texas senator’s futile crusade against Obamacare has been labeled a ‘kamikaze’ mission. But a principled defeat today could lead to victory in 2016.”

Frum asks: “How much do the caucus voters of Iowa care about legislative maneuvering? If the answer is, “Every bit as much as David Gregory,” then Ted Cruz has well and truly put his foot in it. His handling of the “defund Obamacare” interplay between House and Senate is now almost universally derided, by Republicans perhaps even more than by Democrats.

“But suppose—it’s incredible, but suppose—the answer turns out to be, “Not in the slightest.” Suppose what they care about is the optics of a single conservative senator standing and fighting against President Obama and the Washington establishment. In that case, Ted Cruz may be having a rather better news cycle than Washington allows.”

“But a political movement inescapably requires political leadership—and that position has been vacant too long.”

Later, Frum makes the most important point of the piece by pointing out that since Newt Gingrich left Congress in 1998, it’s been radio and TV folk leading the conservative movement. Frum writes: “But a political movement inescapably requires political leadership—and that position has been vacant too long.”

And so my friends, the folks who wouldn’t lead are now the ones jealous that Cruz has stepped up to do what they wouldn’t, or couldn’t.
