Houston’s liberal mayor and city council folk touted what they clearly see as a great deed this week. Mayor Parker “signed an executive order authorizing dissemination of hurricane preparedness and other important information in five foreign languages,” according to a story in the Houston Chronicle.
“Parker said the effort – the first stage to be completed in six months – will be directed to the “most needed” languages rather than the most frequently spoken.” The city already does just about everything in Spanish,” she said. “Houston also has a significant south Asian population, Pakistani and Indian, and Hindi is a commonly spoken language. But many Hindi speakers also are fluent in English,” the story reported.
So now taxpayers in Houston are going to pay for much to be translated and published in six languages. Never mind that also according to the mayor “More than 100 languages are spoken in Houston’s ethnic communities.” (I wonder how guilty these libs feel that they can’t publish in all one hundred languages!)
But to the point, whatever happened to encouraging immigrants to learn English? Why do liberals think they are doing anyone a favor by enabling them to remain sub-cultured in this country by catering to them in such a way that keeps them from having to learn English? While the liberals pat each other on the back about how kind they are millions remain impoverished because the liberals love them so much they don’t strongly incentivise them to learn English.
